About Us
The Leonia Volunteer Fire Department, Company No. 1, was established in 1898, four years after Leonia, first settled by Europeans in 1668, was incorporated as a borough in what is now Bergen County, New Jersey.
In the early days, Leonia's livery stable was owned by Mott Allaire, Leonia's first, and only, cowboy. His horses were used to pull Leonia's first hook and ladder and were also rented to movie producers in Fort Lee during the filming of early westerns.
The Leonia Volunteer Fire Department is now located on Broad Avenue in a 1.5 square mile town that's currently home to about 9,000 residents. Leonia is situated about five minutes from the George Washington Bridge bordering Englewood to the north, Palisades Park to the south, Teaneck to the west and Fort Lee to the east.
